Payroll FAQs

The short answer is yes. Aspects of Payroll can be complex.

For example, the Holiday Act is a very complicated subject and requires professional judgement within the payroll management process. Regarding Holiday Act non-compliance, the Labour Inspectorate found that currently over 88% of organisations have required compliance activities, with the remaining cases still under consideration. The New Zealand Herald published in 2018 a study that found almost 20,000 current and former Auckland Council staff could have been underpaid $18 million in annual leave, sick pay, and public holiday entitlement. With this in mind, it is likely your payroll has not been 100% compliant!

Compliance is not the only reason why it is better to outsource with a Payroll specialist. As a small business owner, you likely already juggle wearing multiple hats. By outsourcing your payroll with a professional accountant, you can spend more time concentrating on your core business needs rather than crunching the numbers.

Payroll is an important aspect of any small business, particularly when it comes time to expanding the business and having employees to pay on time. We strongly suggest you do it right from the beginning and hire a specialist to avoid any issues down the line.

Good question. These are the two key reasons why we believe outsourcing is beneficial to small business owners.

1. Regulatory Compliance
Calculating correct employee entitlements are complicated subject. Even if you are using payroll software such as Smartly, Xero payroll etc, it is very less likely that you are not compliant with Holiday Pay Act. One case example is Auckland Council. Almost 20,000 current and former Auckland Council staff could have been underpaid $18 million in annual leave, sick pay and public holiday entitlements. Even though you are using the payroll software, unless you have a full knowledge of employer obligation, employment relationship and holiday act, it is very hard to maintain accurate payroll data.

2. Cost saving and prioritising core business.
Processing payroll in-house means investing in the necessary computer equipment, payroll software and providing training to ensure that payroll is processed correctly. Additionally, Employers must stay up to date on changes in tax rules, personnel and filing deadlines. Missing such matters can be costly for your business and expose yourself to additional liability.

Processing payroll is unlikely to be a core function of your business. Any time and resources that you devote to it, means less time you have to focus on revenue generating activities. By placing an expert in control of your payroll processing, you can better use your time in areas more closely related to your core business.

Upon sign-up, we will assign a dedicated payroll specialist to arrange payroll set up. You will receive a link to complete your timesheet. This includes sending your payroll information via a link that we provide. From there you will simply upload your information into a spreadsheet. From there we will do the rest.

Once we have all of your information uploaded into our payroll system, we will calculate your PAYE and send you a payroll report for confirmation. Once we receive the confirmation, we will then proceed with payday filing to Inland Revenue as well as generate bank files for you to process and pay your staff.
